Abandoned Baby Crisis in Kenya Far from over

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Stories of newborn babies deserted by their parents because of poverty and disease abound in Kenya, Africa. Based on the numbers acquired from the Frances Jones Abandoned Baby Center, one child is abandoned every day.

Dave was found by police on the streets of Thika when he was only 4 months old. His mother is presumed to have been a person with AIDS.

Feed the Children, an international charity network advancing child care efforts all over the world, believes that the increase in abandoned babies are because of AIDS; a UN Agency counts about 1.1 million children orphaned because of this disease.

Feed the Children founders Larry and Frances Jones established the Abandoned Baby Care Center in 2001 to help address the crisis of abandoned babies in Kenya. The center provides shelter, medical attention and education to give them hope and survival. At present, the center houses deserted babies police find everywhere.

An example is Daniel, who was discovered on top of a trash pile, his face eaten away by dogs. The Abandoned Baby Center took him in and cared for him, including getting a team of surgeons to operate on his damaged face.

For now, the likes of Daniel and Dave will have to keep calling the orphanages and centers their home. Kenyan laws do not allow international adoption, despite many calls to make adoption laws more effective.

Developments in Immunohistochemistry Have Lead to More Accurate Diagnosis of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a uncommon and aggressive tumor where no effective therapy exists notwithstanding the breakthrough of many probable genetic targets. The late stages of Malignant pleural mesothelioma diagnosis and the long period of time that exists connects exposures and diagnosis have made it hard to completely learn the importance of risk factors and their downstream molecular effects.

A lot of hospitals are now seeing more patients that are suffering from pleural mesothelioma. This presents pathologists involved in making the diagnosis with a number of problems, that are divided into those discovered in finding the differences between cancer of the mesothelium and benign changes and those seen in separating cancer of the mesothelium from different forms of e-cadherin and connecting tissue tumors. IHC is a major factor in helping to make the diagnosis, nevertheless it should be interpreted with regards to the medical setting and radiological characteristics, and taking into consideration the broad morphological differences that exist in mesothelioma.

Cancer of the mesothelium is a cancer affecting the serosal cavities, a basic area that is also frequently affected by mets, predominantly from primary cancers of the breast, ovary and lung. Progression in IHC have lead to improved diagnostic sensitivity and cancer of the mesothelium in regards to histological and cytological material. Recently, the researchers used high throughput technology to the identification of new markers that may aid in being able to tell the difference between mesothelioma from ovarian and peritoneal serous carcinoma, closely related histogenesis found in tumors and antigenic profile. Together with the improved medical devices obtainable for serosal carcinoma diagnosis, knowledge regarding the biology of malignant mesothelioma has accumulate as of late.
