50NL Tips

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Once you get to the 50 NL level, you’re going to start playing with online poker players who play a little more seriously than those at the lower levels. So in this article I plan on giving you a few tips to help you out when you’re grinding these casino tables with your 50 dollar buy ins. First, position-position-position. If you’re not familiar with positional play, then get a book and start reading. Start scanning the forums out there for tips on positional play. One of the things I’ve noticed is that the players at this level, love to limp in early and middle position. It’s almost like they live to limp then fold to a raise. Remember this and raise your hands in position. You’ll find that a lot of the time you’ll start taking out pots with just a simple raise from the cutoff or the button. Another thing you’ll notice is that a lot of the players don’t do a lot of 3 and 4 betting. If you 3bet an open raiser, about 80% of the time, you’ll get cold called. Again, this is one of those situations that you can take advantage of with a swift cbet on the flop. And if you get called again, well, you can either double barrel, or give up and check call. Which brings me to my last point. A lot of you reading this may be saying, “check call? WTF?” Yes, check call. I say this because at this level, again you’re running into a lot of novice players that know how to play AB….semiC online poker. One of the biggest leaks in the regular players at this level is bet sizing. They don’t know how to do it correctly and a lot of the time, you’ll get min raised on the turn giving you 1:9000 odds or so to simply check call if you’re on a big draw. You do remember pot odds don’t you?

Seek the Bad, Shun the Good

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

poker online pundits often say that poker players make money from the mistakes made by others rather than from their own skills. That is sound wisdom and underpins the strategy behind isolating bad players and folding when up against strong ones at this jeux de casino.

When you are staring down at players at your own level, who play a strong aggressive game, then you must be highly selective about entering any pots with them with anything but premium cards. If you can avoid swimming with sharks, do so.

On the other hand, you might be able to spot weaker poker online players at the table because of the mistakes they make – passive calling, drawing to the river on an inside straight, and betting their trips against a flushed board. Bad players make costly mistakes that yield bigger profits to smart players. Try to isolate these players with a big raise that chases everyone else off the pot.

Bad players look for reasons to continue betting, while good players focus on why they should fold. Your goal should be to go up against those who make more mistakes and avoid those who don’t. When you’re up against strong players, they are more likely to manipulate you into making costly mistakes. Even when you lose to bad players, they probably don’t have the skills to extract extra bets from you the way strong players do. Always be on the alert to isolate the weak and on guard against the strong players.

Poker Player Profile: Men ‘The Master’ Nguyen

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Men Ngyuen earned his nickname ‘The Master’ from years of playing poker and winning in all of the top level cash games and tournament poker around. Along with major appearances and wins in major events such as the World Series of Poker, Men has become a notorious presence known almost as much for his easy-going and loud, often drunken banter. His catch phrase “All you can eat baby” can be heard repeated not only every time he goes all in, but pretty much any time he makes his way in front of a TV cameraand though with most this repetition would be annoying, with Men you can almost let it go.

Though certainly well versed and lethal in Texas hold em poker, Nguyen might be even more well known for his Omaha skills. Literally capable of taking a wide range of hands and using them against his opponent both when he makes his hand and when they do not, Nguyen uses his garish, if likable appearance to often will his opponents into acting exactly how he wants them to. He perhaps has a better grasp of expectation, and how to manipulate it to his favor, than most any other player of his age and stature. He is a player to be feared.

Fund Raising Ideas

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Once I read a quote “Fundraising is the gentle art of teaching the joy of giving”. It’s a quote by Hank Rosso and the one that really had a continuing and a lasting effect on me. There is something special about facilitating the connection between what you receive from others with what you give to others. In fact I think in a broad way of thinking this is something that you can relate to everything you do in life.

Fundraising does take significant energy and effort but this gives satisfaction if you believe that you make a life by what you give. Since fund raising is being practiced for decades one must have observed many ways to generate funds.

As fundraising often involves the donation of money as an out-right gift, money may also be generated by selling a product of some kind.

Another means could be the donating an in-kind gift that is donation of goods to an organization rather than cash.

Also it’s a common practice to endow some percentage of sales amounts to charitable foundation by promoting the product accompanied by statements that a proportion of proceeds will be directed to a particular foundation.

Another in the list of fundraising ideas is online fundraising. A number of charities and non-profit organizations are increasing using the internet as a means to raise funds.

Colleges and universities have significant role in fund raising programs. Arranging some sort of sports activity for this cause is practiced most in institutions.

How I Spent My Free Poker Money on UB

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I recently got a free $50 on Ultimate Bet via Poker Source Online, and I have decided that I run about as bad on UB as I do on every other site. I dumped all $50 straight into a .10/.25 NL Holdem game. I was sitting with the full buy-in of $550, while most other people were playing with half that or less. Two things are wrong with this: 1. I can’t double up through people if they all have less money than me; 2. I can’t make multiple street bluffs or 3+bet because they’re always committing themselves.

So, ok. The big stack basically affords me to be aggressive with a lot of hands in position preflop. I’ll raise with a large percentage of hands, and hopefully this will get me action later in the session. Early on I get into a hand with someone who has about $12. I either limp in or call a small raise with Ad9d out of position, maybe even in one of the blinds. It comes K,9,5 with two diamonds. So, I flop middle pair and a flush draw. I check, the guy bets out about $1.50 and I raise all in, content to either win the pot right here or have good odds to win if he calls me. He does call, and he has k,9 for two pair. I can win with any diamond or any of the three remaining aces. 12 outs, twice…I’m slightly behind in a coin flip, about 55/45. Not only do I miss, but another king peels off. Essentially, I didn’t mind losing $12 here. Many hands would have folded when faced to make a decision for their entire stack, and it also shows that I’m willing to gamble.

I play for about an hour and end the session down about $10. I try out some sit and go’s and jump up to .25/.50, but get cut short because my brother needed help shaving his head, and end up losing another $10 or so. The next day I decide to try multitabling the micro stakes poker. I jump into 3 tables at .05/.10. At most I was up about 12 dollars combined, but then I got felted on one table where I raised with AA and got called by 2 players. The flop came 10d,8d,3h. I lead out for $1, get min raised to $2 and then I shove for something like 3 more bucks. I get called by 77. He has one diamond. The turn is a 6 and the river is a 9. He made a runner, runner straight. Disgusted I end my poker session down $2.

Technology Conquest for Poker

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Online poker is taking another swig from the cup of convenience, this time using today’s technology to move the game from the desktop and laptop to the mobile phone.

RedKings, an online poker site, has developed a software program specifically for mobile phones working on a 3G wireless network. This is a major step for the industry, as the popularity of smartphones is beginning to become a ubiquitous reality in many markets.

It’s a bold move, taking one out of the pages of many stock trading websites who have already released mobile phone clients to use their systems from anywhere there is a 3G network.

One added bonus is that players can seamlessly switch between their PC clients and the software on their mobile phone. You only have to have one account, the play updates in real time, and with the new processing power made available in these phones, the graphics are just as flashy as if they were on your PC.

The software is also backward compatible, which means that mobile players aren’t restricted to just other mobile players. Rather, they can play against both other mobile players and PC players at the same time.

While the software is a fully released non-beta version, the programming isn’t univeral yet. Redkings has released a list of compatible phones on their website.

If this take hold with the poker playing audience, it will only be a short wait before others follow suit, making mobile real-time online poker another meme as common as text messaging.

Video Games versus Online Poker

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

So, which game is it for you? Online poker or video games? They’re similar, and yet they’re miles apart.

Online poker, for instance, is interactive and played on a screen, just like video games. However, there’s a social aspect to it that even the best online cooperative video games just cannot match.

That’s not to say there aren’t some decent online video games out there that allow players to legitimately interact with other players. It’s just that, on average, the heart-pounding competition one gets from playing online poker trumps some shooter any day of the week.

In video games, you have nothing to lose. Die or get knocked out of a race, and all you have to do is hit continue. No worries. But in online poker, every decision you make has an impact on your bottom line. Want to raise? Careful, because that big time move, while intimidating to other players, is going to involve you putting hard earned cash on the line. Still feel confident? Are you thinking about how much better this is than some no-risk, no-reward online role playing game?

Congrats, you’re playing online poker. Nothing better on a screen anywhere in the world. Bar none.
